Flights & the Drive North

Fly into Toronto Pearson (YYZ) or Ottawa (YOW), pick up a rental car, and drive north through the Canadian Shield. The journey is part of the experience — cities give way to forests, highways narrow to two-lane roads, and the lakes appear one after another.

Ottawa Airport is closer but has fewer international flights. If connecting through Montreal or Toronto, consider flying on to Ottawa for a shorter drive. Head west on Highway 7, then south through Sharbot Lake.

Good to Know Before You Go

Visa & Entry

UK/EU citizens: no visa needed, but you'll need an eTA ($7 CAD, applied online). US citizens: valid passport only. Tourist stays up to 6 months.

Driving

Drive on the right side of the road (opposite to the UK). Your EU/UK driving licence is valid in Ontario. Speed limits are in km/h. Highway 401 is well-maintained and well-signed.

Grocery Stops

Stock up in Kingston (2.5 hrs from Toronto) — full-size Loblaws and Metro supermarkets. Sharbot Lake has smaller convenience stores. Camp's Bay Marina next door sells basics, bait, and ice cream.

Tipping Culture

Canada follows North American tipping customs: 15-20% at restaurants, $1-2 per drink at bars. No tipping required at grocery stores or gas stations.

Day Trips

Kingston (1.5 hrs): historic limestone city, Fort Henry, craft breweries. Ottawa (2 hrs): Parliament Hill, national museums. Bon Echo Provincial Park (1 hr): Indigenous pictographs, cliff faces.

Wildlife

You'll see loons, ospreys, great blue herons, and deer. Occasional moose and black bears — they avoid humans. No dangerous wildlife concerns at the cottage.

How do I fly to cottage country from Europe?

Fly into Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) — the most common gateway with direct flights from London Heathrow, Frankfurt, Paris CDG, Amsterdam, and other major European cities. Return flights from London start at approximately £400-600. Ottawa Airport (YOW) is also an option and is closer to Big Gull Lake (2 hours vs. 3 hours from Toronto). From the airport, you'll need a rental car for the scenic drive north.

Do I need a car to get to cottage country?

Yes — a rental car is essential. There is no public transit to cottage country. Pick up your car at the airport and enjoy a scenic 3-hour drive from Toronto (or 2 hours from Ottawa) through the Canadian Shield landscape. The drive itself is part of the experience — rolling granite, boreal forest, and small towns along the way.

What currency is used? Can I pay in EUR or GBP?

All prices are in Canadian Dollars (CAD). Credit cards (Visa, Mastercard) are accepted virtually everywhere in Canada, and your bank will handle the conversion automatically. For reference: $6,850 CAD (peak summer week) is approximately £3,800 GBP / €4,300 EUR / $4,900 USD. ATMs are available in Kingston and Sharbot Lake along the route.

Do I need travel insurance for Canada?

Yes — strongly recommended. Canada's public healthcare (OHIP) does not cover international visitors. European Health Insurance Cards (EHIC/GHIC) are not valid in Canada. Purchase comprehensive travel insurance before departure that covers medical expenses, trip cancellation, and personal belongings.

How do I get a fishing licence as a non-resident?

Non-residents need an Ontario Outdoors Card plus a fishing licence (conservation or sport). You can purchase both online through the Ontario government website before your trip, or buy them at Camp's Bay Marina next door to Island View Retreat. A non-resident conservation licence costs approximately $55 CAD.

Is there mobile phone signal at the cottage?

Mobile signal is limited in North Frontenac — this is genuine Canadian wilderness. Island View Retreat has Starlink satellite WiFi (~10 Mbps) for staying connected. Most international visitors find the limited signal to be one of the best features: a true digital detox in a world where that's increasingly rare.

Do I need a visa to visit Canada?

UK, EU, and US citizens do not need a visa for tourist visits up to 6 months. UK and EU citizens need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), which costs $7 CAD and can be obtained online in minutes. US citizens need a valid passport but no eTA.

What electrical plugs does Canada use?

Canada uses Type A and B plugs (the same as the US) with 120V/60Hz. European and UK visitors will need a plug adapter. Most modern phone and laptop chargers are dual-voltage (100-240V) and only need the physical adapter, not a voltage converter.
