Why Paddle Big Gull Lake?
With 30+ islands scattered across 21 km of Canadian Shield lake, Big Gull Lake is one of eastern Ontario's best paddling destinations. The lake offers everything from easy half-day island hops to multi-day canoe camping circuits — and you'll likely have most of it to yourself.
The shoreline is almost entirely undeveloped. No towns, no commercial strips, no public beaches — just 88 km of granite, white pine, and boreal forest. Combined with the crystal-clear water, it feels more like Algonquin Park than a lake 3 hours from Toronto.
Route Suggestions
Half-Day: East Basin Island Loop (8–10 km)
Launch from Island View Retreat's dock and paddle east through the cluster of islands near Camp's Bay. Circle behind the larger islands, stop on a rocky shore for lunch, and return in 3–4 hours. This route stays in the sheltered east basin and is suitable for beginners and families with older children.
Full Day: East to West Traverse (18–21 km)
For experienced paddlers, traverse the full length of the lake from the east end to Little Gull Lake (west basin). The character of the lake changes dramatically as you move west — deeper water and rocky islands give way to shallower bays with weed growth and lily pads. Plan 6–8 hours with stops. Arrange vehicle shuttle or plan for the return paddle.
Overnight: Island Camping Circuit (2–3 days)
North Frontenac Parklands manages 25 designated island campsites on Big Gull Lake ($25/night, max 6 people). Pick 2–3 sites along the lake and paddle between them, fishing and exploring as you go. This is the ultimate way to experience the lake.

Island View Retreat includes 2 canoes, 2 fishing kayaks, and 2 paddleboards with every stay — no need to bring your own. PFDs are provided for adults and children.
For extended trips, bring:
- Dry bags for gear and electronics
- Sun protection (hat, sunscreen, sunglasses with strap)
- Water bottles and snacks
- Waterproof map or GPS (cell service is limited)
- Fishing rod — you’ll want to cast a line from the kayak
Wind and Weather
Big Gull Lake runs roughly east-west, so prevailing westerly winds can build waves along the main fetch. Morning is typically the calmest time to paddle. If the wind picks up, tuck behind the islands — the east basin's cluster of islands provides excellent wind shelter.
The west basin (Little Gull Lake) is shallower and more exposed. Wind-driven waves build faster there, so check conditions before heading west.
Wildlife from the Water
Paddling is the best way to see wildlife on Big Gull Lake. Common loons breed on the islands — keep your distance from nesting sites (loons will abandon their nest if disturbed). Great blue herons stalk the shallows, ospreys and bald eagles circle above the treeline, and you'll hear white-throated sparrows singing from every island.
At dusk, paddle slowly along the shoreline to spot white-tailed deer coming to the water's edge. Dawn and dusk paddles are magical — flat water, low-angle light, and loon calls echoing across the lake.
